There are times when you really need to block internet access from Windows programs. This could be because some of these programs automatically download and install updates over the air.
In the case when you have a capped bandwidth, this becomes an automatic problem to solve.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to maximize your bandwidth by blocking internet access from Windows programs, and ensuring that your bandwidth is used only where you require them.
Block Internet Access From Windows Programs
1. Navigate to Windows Firewall in your PC
Hint: Users of Previous Windows 7 can locate Windows Firewall by simply typing “Firewall” on the search tab beneath the Start Menu. While Windows 8 users should quickly hit the “Windows Key” and type “Firewall”. You will find it on the “Settings” Tab.
2. Click Advanced Settings
3. Click Outbound Rules
4. Create a “New Rule”
Hint: Ensure that “block internet connection” and all 3 boxes in the image below are checked.
5. Browse for the Program you which to block from accessing the internet.
6. Give the rule a name; eg “The Sage internet access update denied”
Hint: Naming a rule allows for ease in discovering a rule should we want to disable the rule in future or delete it entirely.
7. Click Next and close all open windows.
Automatic update and internet access on any program you created a rule for has been blocked.
Note: If you want to disable or delete this rule to un-block internet access from Windows programs and allow automatic updates. All you have to do is;
Un-block Internet Access From Windows Programs
1. Go to Advanced Settings on your Firewall
2. Click Outbound rules
3. Locate the rule on the list of rules in the middle column of the Firewall settings box
4. Select the rule and Click disable or delete.
5. Close all windows.
